Ages of Lok Sabha members and the general population

Over the years, the average age of the Lok Sabha has gradually been increasing — from 46.5 years for the first Lok Sabha to 57.5 years for the current one. In comparison, the average age of Indians as per the 2011 census is 27.8 years. This disparity in age between the citizens and their representatives dipped briefly after the 12th Lok Sabha elections, but continued thereafter.

In India, central government employees retire at the age of 60 years.

If held by that standard, about 222 Lok Sabha members would have to hang their boots.

Data about India's population was obtained from figures of the 2011 census: http://www.censusindia.gov.in/2011census/Age_level_Data/India/Age_data.xls

Data regarding the ages of the current Lok Sabha members was compiled from the official Lok Sabha website: http://164.100.47.132/LssNew/Members/MemberSearchByAge.aspx. Data for only 537 out of 544 members was available.

Data regarding the average ages of the previous Lok Sabhas was obtained from: http://pib.nic.in/elections2009/volume1/chap-27.pdf. It was assumed that the average age was for each Lok Sabha near the end of its term.

Average ages were used instead of the median ages because we could only find sources for the average age of the previous Lok Sabhas.
