Parliamentary constituencies and the Lok Sabha

Each member of the Lok Sabha is the elected representative of one of the parliamentary constituencies of a state or a union territory. Every parliamentary constituency is composed of multiple state assembly constituencies of roughly equal population. In this manner, the number of Lok Sabha MPs from each state is decided by its population. However, the number of constituencies in each state was frozen in 1976 so as to not interfere with family planning laws. The next delimitation will be done in 2026 when the birth rate of India is expected to stabilize.
